Get green-fingered with free compost giveaways in Oxfordshire

Working with three local districts, Green Power will make almost 35 tonnes of compost available to the public to take away for free during three pop-up events.

The first is taking place at Florence Park, Oxford on Saturday (9 March), where 10 tonnes of compost will be given away in collaboration with Oxford City and Oxfordshire Reuses.

Next, residents in Abingdon will get their opportunity to be green-fingered by grabbing some of the 12 tonnes of compost at the town’s leisure centre on 16 March, thanks to our work with Vale of White Horse District Council.

The final event will take place at the former South Oxfordshire Council offices in Crowmarsh Gifford on Sunday, 17 March, where a further 12 tonnes will be available.

The compost has been made at two open windrow composting sites (OWCs) within the county at Wallingford and Showell, and takes about six weeks to go from garden waste collected at residents' kerbside to being ready to spread back to land. During the process, litter is removed, and the organic matter is shredded and turned repeatedly. Heat builds up within the compost windrows, allowing microbes to break down the material - it has been known to reach a whopping 90C!

The public have been asked to bring along their own containers for the compost, and there will also be a range of fun family activities taking place at the same time
